Who are you beyond your roles?
How would you like to be remembered from this place of Self?
How would you like to be honoured?
How do you meet yourself?
When do you feel most beautiful?
Where do you hold your grace?
How does fear hold you?
In a good death, how would it be to surrender to the earth? How would earth hold you?
For three years, 1-2 times a month, I’ve had the priviledge of holding workshop-style death ceremonies that I’ve created. I’m so happy to take this offering to friends in LA. Thank you for considering spending your Sunday afternoon learning and co-creating with me.
Past particpants mention leaving the experience with a positive, uplifting, and empowered feeling. My goal is to create a safe, encouraging, curious, warm, loving environment to return ourselves towards a healthier sense of mortality salience, agency, dignity, acceptance, and grace when investigating our lives and our impermance. Together, we will attempt to look at death and our own mortality through a mindful, broad, compassionate lens pointed towards the impermance of nature - both outside and within - it’s reminding cycles, mythology and ancient practices, ritual remembering, current western alternative death care practices, and green death education. Participants will leave with practical tools that encourage a safe and ongoing conversation with mortality. I am grateful to have sat with 250+ participants on this journey together and look forward to meeting you! If you'd like more information about my work or to read past testimonials for this particular event, please visit https://www.lengthofacandle.com/
As a trauma-informed careworker and healer, I like to give a clear understanding of the setting and tone to help everyone feel as comfortable as possible before arriving, and that is listed below. I'd like to note that this particular method of work is my own and proprietary. I have spent years developing this process very carefully and I outline it here in trust. I am not a gatekeeper of knowledge or information, I am in this world to serve and share what I learn. Each ceremony is a little different but below is the flow of what we will do together.
The format flows as follows:
We introduce ourselves, though the introduction is an invitation - no one has to speak if they do not wish to. I explain my work both personally and historically, many thanks are given. What follows is a brief educational and conversational talk on anti-capitalist and green options in death care, how death became an industry, terror management theory, and impermanence using nature as our guide. There are two meditations before we journal and complete a holographic will. The focus here is unique in that we attempt a return to Self without consideration of property or possessions. We explore the meaning and value of our grace and our beauty, our love and our grief, our forgiveness and our acceptance in reflection of our own impermanence and mortality. We close with a guided journey that sits with subtle noise to imagine our bodies returning to the earth simulating a still and peaceful death space amongst nature. Integration tips, aftercare, conversation, snacks for grounding and questions complete our time together — this part of the journey together has historically been so curious and nourishing that you may want to allow for more time together at the end. I stay for 30 extra minutes if we wish to continue conversation together as a group or otherwise.
This experience is very personal and there is much trust within the room. Each person has individual space to explore without feeling watched, and no one is ever called to speak if they don’t wish to. I do many check-ins and pay close attention to care that may be needed throughout the meditation. Death -- similar to perhaps only birth and gratefully, nature -- is the universal binder of all humans though our individual experience of death is a very unique reflection of our worldview (ie; personal experience, culture, gender, religion, race, class structure, ancestral mapping, etc). In recognizing this, I intend to pull the common thread that connects us all universally in place and understanding, looking always to the pulse of nature as our guide. We forgo a last will that upholds death-as-industry ideas post-20th century (e.g. personal possessions, work/productivity, or capital in reflection of one’s life) and instead gently move toward the fundamental understanding of why we are alive, the cycle of the body, and, consciousness. Nature can quietly connect us all to our mortality daily. When we connect with this understanding in a deeper and consistent way from love, when the time comes to face our own mortality directly, we can then meet it with a greater presence of self, a calmer mindset of acceptance, and more loving awareness to ripple outwards and share with others.
You will need to bring:
please note we will be sitting on the floor so please bring a pillow for extra comfort for yourself to support your body and head (bringing two pillows isn’t excessive!)
blanket, pillow, yoga mat or towel to lay on, eye pillow or eye mask if you have one to deepen the experience, notebook, pen, water bottle, small items for personal altar, small items for community altar (these will be given back)
an email with deeper descriptions of requirements will be sent to guests 3 days before event
Please note:
Due to the dedicated, devoted, and delicate nature of this work, the space rental, supply cost, as well as my time, I am not able to send donations back once offered. I aim to be flexible and compassionate to the times and the environments we live in + compete with daily. If you have to cancel or cannot attend, or if you are sick or ill, please do not attend and let me know - you’ll be invited to any upcoming online event or your choosing in the future.
Info about the space + Covid Measures:
Moon Studio is a ground level space. It is not scent free and masks are highly encouraged to support the immunocompromised folks in attendance (myself, and owner of the studio, Sarah). If you need any support at all - for your body, mind, or spirit - please reach out with your needs. I aim to offer compassionate support however I am able. There is a main level washroom and parking is located on the street. Address will be sent out 3 days prior to event.
ABOUT BROOKE:
A death doula leans into the spiritual-socio-bio-psycho-philosophical needs of each individual to co-create holistic and personalized places of understanding and care with each person or group they work with whether in active stages of grief, dying, or otherwise. In a group setting, it is important to me to create a safe space for all that attend. I recognize that I am unable to have lengthy conversations with each individual before the meditation but I do invite you to share with me anything you feel I might need to know about you to help create a place of safety for you during the meditation.
Though I am wary of death doula training programs, I am trained under the Institute of Traditional Medicine and INELDA and have been a practicing death doula since 2017, working in the death realm long before that. I am careful with whom I learn from within all modalities. I am an academic science and literature freak as well as a healthy spiritual seeker. I lean on my education as well as peer/colleague wisdom, personal experience, and ancestral knowledge and teachings (both in my lineage and gratefully, through many of my teachers) to inform my scope of care. I am averse to much of the very white-washed spiritual wellness world and also feel similarly about colonial notions of privilege and value through heavy-handed institutionalization and death as industry though I recognize that both exist. I follow INELDA's code of ethics (happy to share this document at request). I am a clairesensory intuitive currently in post-grad psychotherapy training and I am a licensed Clinical Practioner of Hypnotherapy, studied by University of Toronto under Georgia Cannon. For more information about my education and practice, you can visit my instagram at @lengthofacandle or my website at lengthofacandle.com.
